I recently had a friend who ran the IronMan. This is a grueling race where one swims 2.5 miles in the open water, bikes 110 miles and finishes with a full marathon of 26.2 miles. It took him 15:35 hours to complete this competition. This feat would be difficult enough if the water was calm and smooth and if there were no hills and valleys but to add choppy waves, steep hills and low valleys just makes it all the more difficult to see the finish line.
I read in Mark 1: 2,3 yesterday which says,
It is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” – “a voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'” This passage was prophetically foretold in Isaiah 40:3-5 which adds, “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it.”
I had this image of topography that had deep valleys and high mountains and all of a sudden everything leveling out. How much easier would the journey be?
Just as John was called to prepare the way for the Lord, I believe our responsibility is to make the journey as easy as possible for people to get to the Him. We can level their path so that they can see the glory of God. I question myself and my actions…what am I doing today that will help others to see God?
