Waking up with the sunrise, I stepped out onto the balcony and was in awe each morning of the beauty in the midst of desolation. Gazing upon Lake Kivu, I was mesmerized by it’s peaceful waves. Walking down a flight of steps, meandering through a small garden, I arrived on the breakfast patio that sits on the edge of Lake Kivu in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. Greeted by beautiful smiles and the kindest, “Bonjours”, I surveyed the breakfast buffet. Each morning I reached for the same – fresh avocado, toast, delicious cheeses and fresh fruit. I tried the coffee but my American palette couldn’t quite acquire the taste.
Nothing was more peaceful than these mornings of gentle cool breezes, eating fresh food and watching as the daily fishermen came by searching for their catch of the day.
Transported into another time, a unique place, I was in awe that people are the same everywhere. We all want a kind smile, a word of appreciation and a connection to another human being.
We were in Goma, D.R. Congo working with locals to establish homes for widows and their children. The need is everywhere and our resources limited, yet somehow we were determined to leave our marked on this place – one person at a time.
Goma, D.R. Congo – known for multiple brutal wars, bloodshed, rape and death, still held the promise of a better tomorrow.
I was reminded that in the complexities of broken governments, unimaginable poverty, hurt and pain that there is beauty, there are possibilities and great hope. We will never be able to stamp out God’s goodness and His care for His people.
In a matter of days, Goma, D.R. Congo was tattooed on my heart. People just like me wanting the best for their families and a promise for a better tomorrow. By unifying under a loving Father, we can reveal His beauty to the world.

May we continue to live…
