When darkness is screaming that God has abandoned you, listen to the calm powerful voice of Jesus saying, I will never leave you.”
“Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46) To hear Jesus on the cross utter these words from the depth of his soul must have shaken the crowd. Our Messiah, our Savior feeling utter abandonment. I have often wondered at this moment. Theologians speak of it but all of us struggle with it. Here is our Savior on the cross, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders and feeling so desperately alone. Have you felt that despair before? That hopelessness? That confusion? That feeling of abandonment?
Guess what…Jesus understands your feelings. He has been there. But it is through his experience on the cross that we know that we have hope. Yes, Jesus felt alone but there was also a resurrection. A moment in time where everything was right again. In our lives, sometimes we are in a situation that we think will never change. Oh…but our God…our God…He specializes in resurrections…in new days…in hope.
Hebrews 4:14-16 says, “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just we are – yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Hold tight to Jesus in your difficult times – keep the faith (which is “being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.) He understands everything we are going through and asks us to approach his throne of grace with confidence for he will give us mercy and grace.
Our God specializes in resurrections and new days – go to Him with confidence. He will never leave you!!!
