Making Decisions

I will not waste time on second thoughts. When I make a decision, I will stick by it.

Andy Andrews

One of my favorite books of all time is The Traveler’s Gift by Andy Andrews. It is so thought-provoking and inspiring, challenging us how we live our lives. He has 15 lessons he wants the reader to take to heart and I thought it would be fun if we went over one a month.

The first one is “I will not waste time on second thoughts. When I make a decision, I will stick by it.”

Indecisiveness can stop us from fully living. It disables us letting whatever or whoever around us direct our lives.

We can always say, “what if …, if only …, maybe I should have …, etc.” Decision making usually involves evaluating possible outcomes from all sides, seeking wisdom, and then at some point we have to make a decision. Second guessing ourselves brings anxiety, robs us of peace and creates a double mind.

In fact, James 1:5-8 says, “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.  But he must ask in faith, without doubting, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  That man should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.  He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

When we have to make decisions, rather than being unstable and going back and forth, Scripture has given us a game plan – seeking wisdom from God. His wisdom comes through prayer, studying His Word so we operate with a Biblical worldview, and seeking the counsel of Godly people.

James tells us that if we ask in faith and not doubt, God will give us wisdom generously. We can make God-directed decisions and trust Him to bring about the desired result.

May we continue to live …

Rooted in Him,
