When I think of the powerful God that we have the most amazing opportunity to know, I often imagine him as fearless, untouchable, full of love, perfection and so much more. The one thing I often don’t think of is “when God is in pain”.
It broke my heart to read in Genesis 6:5,6, “The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth and his heart was filled with pain.”
Ummm…this shook me to my core. God’s heart was filled with pain…because of mankind. Because of our sinfulness. Because of me…
I think about my own kids and the pain that I feel when they do wrong. I can only imagine that this is a fraction of what the Lord feels when His children live out evil practices. His desire for us to live a holy life is so great. He doesn’t just want to have control over us but He knows that when we follow evil desires that we heap pain, shame and regret onto our lives.
When we love Him deeply, obediently follow His ways, we not only bring Him joy but we also rid ourselves of the pain that sin brings.
“And this is love: that we walk in obedience to His commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.” 2 John 6
