Who Am I

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But what about you?” he asked.  “Who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the son of the living God.”

Matthew 16:13-16

The question is posed to us as well…. “Who do you say I am?”  What is it we believe about God?  What name have we given Him?  What do we believe His nature to be?

Even Moses, when he was commissioned by God to deliver the Israelites, said to Him, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’  Then what shall I tell them?”  God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” Exodus 3:13-14

God is everything we need and more.  He is all encompassing and in Him lacks nothing.  Often times, we attempt to create God into our image, into something we can understand and tame.  Yet, truly this is not what the core of our heart craves.  Instead, we must remember we are created in His image.  He is the Potter and we are the clay.  It’s only because of Him that we have breath in our lungs and a heart that beats for an intimacy with Him.

We often have fallible views of God, incorrect beliefs that directly affect how we live our lives.  Instead, we must seek the truth of who He really is despite what we believe in our minds. What are our beliefs based upon? Do we learn about who God really is through His word or is it based upon our upbringing, sermons we have heard, our experiences? God is asking each one of us the question, “Who do you say I am?”

Is He our Savior?  Our Lord?  Sovereign over all?

Who do we say He is?
