Another shooting in our schools…how can this be? What possesses a person to bring such horror and pain to the lives of the innocent? When I first heard about the shooting at the elementary school in Connecticut, I immediately began to personalize the situation and put myself in the shoes of the parents. What if it was my child in that school? I could see myself not letting anyone stop me until I could hold my child and know that he/she was o.k. Being a mom of two incredible kids, I know what it means to be a fierce “mama bear.” No one messes with my kids. I am like a ninja able to destroy anyone who would try to hurt them. If it were my kids in that school, I would do whatever it takes to make sure they were safe and unharmed.
As that thought went through my mind I was immediately hit with an eternal tug. Do I fight that hard for their spiritual life? Am I a powerful warrior that goes to battle daily for their souls? John 10:10 says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” Do I stand idly by while the enemy wrecks havoc on my family? Matthew 10:28 says, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” It is the spiritual battle for the souls of my children that I must focus my fight on. I was convicted to pray the armor of God all over my family. Ephesians 6:10-18 describes this armor. As you read over this familiar passage, ponder each action step.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
This passage reminded me that we will be in a battle, not maybe. But…when we’re in the midst of the battle we are to stand firm in God’s power. I am challenged to pray all of these pieces of armor for my family. I must “be alert and always keep on praying.” This is the battle we are called to engage in. Stand firm and you will see God deliver. We must not run, not hide, not waiver but stand our ground.
