Christmas Eve – Books and Chocolate

I’ve always been big on establishing traditions, especially at Christmas time. In the years past, when my kids were young, we enjoyed Christmas Eve with gifts of new pajamas, two new games, Christmas movies, and yummy treats.

Christmas Eve looks a bit different now. My kids have grown and are establishing their own traditions which pushes me to look at how Christmas Eve can still be a special time. I recently came across the perfect idea for this season of life. It’s called Jolabokaflod.

It’s a big word that describes an Icelandic tradition in which many look forward to on Christmas Eve. They gift each other a book, snuggle up by the fire and spend the Eve of Christmas reading, enjoying hot chocolate and being together in a cozy, warm home.

I fell in love with this idea and decided this would be the year to follow suit. I purchased a book specific for each person who will be at our home on Christmas Eve. We will spend the night in comfortable lounge clothes, diving into our new books and sharing our thoughts on what we’re reading, all while enjoying plates filled with various chocolates, coffee and hot chocolate, and a mix of light sandwiches.

Seasons change and so do traditions. And honestly … this just might be my favorite tradition yet. However you spend your Christmas season, may it be filled with remembrance of the greatest gift of all – the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

May we continue to live…
Rooted in Him,
