Calm in Our Chaos

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out.  As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.  “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

Luke 8:22-25

Sometimes in the midst of our ordinary day with ordinary plans, chaos unexpectedly envelopes us. It seems from out of nowhere, the difficulties of life step in, threatening to overwhelm us.

We may even believe that our chaotic situation will be the end of life as we know it. Frantically, we look around for stability, for a way to stop impending doom. It may even seem God is not with us, that perhaps He’s uncaring about our situation.

The feelings of panic and dread overwhelm us and we call out for God to intervene. And, there is always a point in our story that He does intervene. The difficult part is we don’t know when that “point” is. It always feel like it’s later than we would like. At times, we may wonder if He even hears our cries.

As the disciples cried out to Jesus, believing they would die, Jesus got up and rebuke the wind and the waves. The storm subsided and all became calm. All must bow to the authority of Christ.

As we cry out to Jesus, believing we will be overcome by whatever chaotic storm is in our life, Jesus will rebuke the chaos, the storms will subside and all will become calm. All must bow to the authority of Christ.

However, we don’t control the timing of the ceasing of our storms. The storms may last for a while, yet Jesus will always ride through the storms with us. Faithful living trusts that He is with us and, at the right time, will silence the storm.

As faith is living confidently for what we hope for and believing for that which we don’t yet see (Hebrews 11:1), having faith in a chaotic situation ushers in calm in the midst of the storm. Jesus will never leave or abandon us. Faith allows us to believe this, even if we can’t see it.

May we continue to live…
